Religious freedom is under threat not in repressive, totalitarian regimes but here in Britain. That's the claim of a growing number of church leaders who reckon that laws designed to increase equality are making life significantly tougher for people of faith. They're making Britain "a cold place for Christians", according to a Church of England Bishop. And the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cardiff has written frankly about what he sees as "slow but steady pressure on religious freedom", active hostility in some influential quarters and profound ignorance about religion by some in senior positions in public life.

In "All Things Considered" this week (Sunday, 2 August 8.30am, repeated Wednesday 5 August 6.30pm), Roy Jenkins and guests explore the issues asking how concerned should people of faith be? Are they simply trying to defend privilege? And how much remains to be done in the view of campaigners who want to see even less of public religion? Taking part are Hanne Stinson, Chief Executive of the British Humanist Association; Dr. Dan Boucher, Director of Parliamentary Affairs for CARE Christian Action Research and Education; and The Most Rev. Peter Smith, Archbishop of Cardiff.
