Loretta Minghella - Christian Aid

Last updated: 16 May 2010

On 'All Things Considered' this week (Sunday May 16th at 08.31, repeated on Thursday April 20th at 05.32) Roy Jenkins' guest is Loretta Minghella, the new director of Christian Aid, which has just mobilised a third of a million people to knock on doors and ask for money for the poorest people in the world.

Loretta Minghella comes from a colourful family. Her sister is a jazz singer. Her younger brother writes for television, and her elder brother was the Oscar-winning film director, the late Anthony Minghella, who was responsible for such hits as 'The English Patient' and 'Truly, Madly Deeply'.

She herself is an official taster for her family's celebrated ice-cream firm, though her ability to pronounce on a citrus mint twist or a chocolate orange delight is likely to be less significant than her experience as a lawyer and as chief executive of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. In five years, she oversaw the payout of a staggering £21 billion.

In her first broadcast interview in her new role, Loretta Minghella talks to Roy about her family, her faith and her aspirations for Christian Aid.
