On All Things Considered this week (Sunday 1 August at 8.30, repeated on Thursday 5 August at 5.30am), Roy Jenkins guest is a convert from Catholicism who is reckoned to be one of the most influential Muslims in Britain.
Sarah Joseph is founder and editor of emel, a glossy lifestyle magazine where features on food and fashion, health and relationships sit alongside profiles of Muslims working out their faith in varied situations, and down-to-earth comment rooted in the Quran.
With an accountant father and a mother who owned a modelling agency, Sarah Joseph was sixteen when she first embraced her new faith. It became her driving passion, prompting first her academic studies and then a journalistic career which has made her a prolific contributor to national and international publications and a regular broadcaster.
Her concern that popular understanding of Islam should not be defined by extremist rhetoric and terrorist atrocity has made her a welcome bridge-building lecturer around Britain and across the world, and her work was honoured with an OBE when she was still just 33.
