Bye Buy Childhood

Last updated: 19 September 2010

Exploiting children for profit is wrong. Hardly a contentious assertion, but according to the Mothers' Union it's happening increasingly thanks to the combined efforts of the advertising industry, the media, and big business.

It believes that "£350 million is spent in the UK each year on persuading children to consume".

The use of pester power and peer manipulation worries many parents, the Union says, along with increasing sexualisation of younger children and the impact all of that has on their health and general wellbeing.

The Mothers' Union, the Anglican women's movement, makes the claims in a new report (Bye Buy Childhood) into what it terms the commercialisation of childhood.

But is their analysis correct? Are most children really being exploited? And if so, who's responsible and what can be done? Roy Jenkins and guests discuss the issues.

All Things Considered is broadcast on Sunday 19 September at 9am on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Wales and repeated on Thursday 23 September at 5am.
