The Ethics of Business

Last updated: 16 January 2011

On All Things Considered this week (Sunday 16 January at 9am repeated on Thursday 20 January at 5.30am), Roy Jenkins and guests discuss the ethics of business.

How reassured would you be if your supermarket guaranteed that it would always give the best possible deal; if your bank pledged that it would always pay you the highest return on your savings; and if every firm using a call centre promised that it would never keep your call on hold for more than 30 seconds?

Would you be convinced? This week the Archbishop of Wales has called on those involved in business to adopt an ethical business code, similar to the Hippocratic Oath sworn by doctors.

As top bankers continue to defend their massive bonuses. and some high street retailers report bumper profits, would such commitments make any difference? How much should we allow ethical and religious beliefs to affect our financial dealings? Or do money and morality simply not mix?

Joining Roy to discuss these issues are:

  • Gary Grant, founder of The Entertainer, the United Kingdom's largest independent toy retailer
  • Akmal Hanuk, Chief Executive, of the Islamic Banking and Finance Centre in Cardiff
  • Ian Angell, professor of information systems at the London School of Economics
  • Archbishop Barry Morgan
