Shami Chakrabati
Last updated: 20 February 2011
On All Things Considered this week (Sunday 20 February at 9am and repeated on Thursday 24 February at 5.30am), Roy Jenkins' guest is Shami Chakrabati director of Liberty, the influential campaigning group committed to protecting civil liberties and promoting human rights.
Shami Chakrabati appears regularly on radio and television, setting out simply and directly arguments which she knows many will find unpalatable, dealing with such questions as: How far should individual liberties be curtailed in face of the threat of terror? How long should anyone be held in custody without being charged? What are the practical limits of free speech?
She has been in the top job for more than seven years, having joined the organisation after practising briefly as a barrister and working for the Home Office, where much of the law she has found herself opposing has been formulated.
