'It's about liberation - the biggest, most dramatic redistribution of power from elites in Whitehall to the man and woman on the street,' says the prime minister.

It's about saving money, say his critics: getting volunteers to do the work of professionals, shifting wealth from poor to rich, putting many existing charities out of business and in the process leaving the most vulnerable even more exposed.

Roy Jenkins and his guests explore the meaning of the Big Society and ask the extent to which Mr Cameron's dream corresponds to a Christian vision for society, and what its effects could be on the community work of churches.
