Passion Plays

Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week when Christians reflect on the events which led to the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Since medieval times, the passion play has been one of the ways of telling the story as local people have become characters from the gospels in their own communities: this year's Port Talbot Passion brings the Hollywood actor Michael Sheen back to his home town and is likely to be one of the biggest in the UK. Most are much less ambitious.
Set against the back drop of rehearsals for a passion play at Wesley Methodist Church in Canton in Cardiff, Roy Jenkins asks what these events are about, exploring both the origin of the passion play, and the extent to which it can still succeed in making the story known.
