Eye On Wales: Monday 12 February

Deadly car chase

Monday 12 February at 6.03pm
(repeated Sunday 18 February at 6.31am)

For our police forces, keeping the roads safe is one of their most important jobs...but just how safe are we, from them?

Fatal accidents involving police cars have increased five-fold since 1997, prompting an in-depth review by the Independent Police Complaints Commission. They're assessing 48 such deaths which occurred across England and Wales during 2005-2006, including a number in Wales, and are due to report later this spring on their findings.

Ahead of publication, the IPCC reveal to Eye On Wales that they have been disappointed by the response from police forces to recommendations for improvement following previous such reports. Some fear that the lessons of the past aren't being learnt.

The programme hears from victims' organisations and families who have lost loved ones in police pursuits or during emergency calls. We hear from one family dealing with their grief and the knowledge that police officers breached procedure during a pursuit which ended in their son's death when his car crashed and burst into flames. The coroner wrote to the chief constable following the inquest, expressing his concern about the case.

Eye On Wales takes to the roads with North Wales police to see the pressures at first-hand, and hear what's being done to try and reduce the death toll.
