Eye On Wales: Monday 11 June

The future of employment for disabled people

Monday 11 June at 6.32pm
(repeated Sunday 17 June at 6.31am)

Disabled workers were left stunned a few weeks ago when Remploy, the leading provider of employment services for disabled people in Wales, announced a major shake up of their factories.

In proposals to be put before the Government, the company are suggesting that five of the factories should go, while another three could be merged, in all over 400 workers from the South Wales valleys and Wrexham may find themselves with no job to go to.

Remploy aim to close the ailing factories and use the money to get the workers permanent jobs in the mainstream employment market.

The company was set up 60 years ago, designed to get post war disabled workers back into employment. The first factory was opened in Bridgend in 1946 making furniture and violins. This factory is now earmarked for closure.

This week in Eye on Wales one Remploy worker tells us about his fears for the future, and presenter Peter Johnson tries to discover what the future may hold for the disabled workers.
