Eye On Wales: Monday 22 October

Stradey Park saga

Monday 22 October at 6.32pm
(repeated Sunday 28 October at 6.31am)

This week's programme revisits the saga of Stradey Park - home to the Llanelli Scarlets, one of Wales' four rugby regions.

We investigate the latest hitch in long-running plans to sell off the historic, iconic ground.

A year ago, the Llanelli Scarlets were facing a public inquiry into proposals to sell off Stradey for a major housing development, which would pay off the club's multi-million pound debts and secure their future by enabling them to move to a brand new stadium at Pemberton, on the other side of the town.

Despite heavy opposition and fears about flood risks to the site, the plans were finally approved by Assembly Government inspectors in June this year, and the Scarlets thought they were home and dry.

But the Stradey Residents' Action Group launched a further bid to halt the housing development, this time by claiming that two training pitches on the site should be designated as 'village green' - a move which, if backed by planning inspectors, would prohibit building on the land.

A second public inquiry kicks off tomorrow and for the Scarlets, the stakes are high: if the inquiry doesn't go their way, and the £5m parcel of land protected from development, their plans will be thrown into disarray and, they claim, the future of the region put in jeopardy.

Tonight's Eye on Wales hears from the club and its warring neighbours about their continuing battle over the scheme.

The programme reveals that the protestors were so concerned about the planning process behind the scheme, and Carmarthenshire Council's role in the affair, that they were set to challenge it in the High Court.
