A promise
Siaron West desperately wants to keep her promise to allow her terminally ill husband to die at home... but will the authorities allow her to do so?
Tonight, in the first in a new series, Eye on Wales follows Siaron, a GP living in Cardiff, through her fight to hang onto the social care package which she says has helped keep her family - terminally ill husband Pete Rees, who suffers from an aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis, and their daughter Catrin, seven - together despite his worsening condition.
While Pete battles his illness, Siaron is battling the system - which wants her husband to be reassessed for an NHS care package, which although providing district nurses to visit daily, would mean the family losing the team of personal assistants and carers they have employed for several years. Siaron, who handles much of her husband's medical needs herself, is afraid the move may ultimately result in Pete having to go into a nursing-home.
The programme also hears from social care experts about the difficulties people face in obtaining, and keeping, the right sort of care for their complex needs; and meets others caught up in what's seen as a gap in care provision - particularly for those living in the community.
