Cannabis Farms

Cannabis Farms

Police raids on cannabis factories are now a regular event across Wales. Is there one in a street near you?

Monday 14 July 2008, 6.32pm

In 2006 Gwent Police busted 14 cannabis farms. Last year that figure increased nearly fourfold to 53. Many of those raids were in Newport.

Eye on Wales was given exclusive access to follow Detective Inspector Steve Webber and his team as they went about what is now a well-rehearsed routine.

From the initial briefing, through to the raid itself and the subsequent search of the property, Eye on Wales was there as officers swooped on an expensive property in a prosperous part of the city.

The programme also speaks to one of the unsuspecting landlords that the cannabis farmers rely on to flourish. Earlier this year a bit of detective work of his own lead John Leaver to discover a cannabis factory in a property he owns in Caerleon.

He tells the programme how he found himself face to face with one of those left behind in the house to care for a crop worth £80,000.
