Vulnerable Adults

Studies show that older people in Wales are more likely to suffer abuse or neglect than anywhere else in the UK. A leading charity is calling for new legislation to improve protection of over-65's and other vulnerable adults - affording them similar protection in law to children. Eye on Wales investigates.

We're all living longer: within a quarter of a century, it's predicted that one in three people in Wales will be over 65.

Following a series of damning reports on the care of older people, pressure is growing for the Welsh Government to introduce more stringent legislation forcing local authorities to investigate suspicions of abuse or neglect of older people and other vulnerable adults, and placing an onus on those working with them to report any concerns about their welfare to the authorities.

As leading charity Age Cymru launches a major campaign this week, the programme hears also from those working in nursing and social care about the dilemmas they face.
