The South African rugby icon gives advice on how to make it to the top.

Talent can only take you so far

It's true in all aspects of life that talent can open doors for you, but it's your attitude that gets you over the last hurdle. South Africa has come close to losing lots of games, it's then that talent goes out the window and you need strength of character to stand up and be counted.

Keep cool

In situations where the chips are down and things are tough, try and stay calm and relaxed. It's important to stay level headed when the pressure's on.

Take small steps

In the middle of a game I try to get the guys to focus on the next task. Try not to think too much about the bigger picture, just focus on what's happening next.

Honesty is the best policy

A leader needs people that are willing to follow. To be a leader you have to be honest, accountable and you have to show the team that you're taking them in the right direction.

Don't take anything for granted

I've been in games where my team has had a comfortable lead, then we've taken our foot off the pedal and lost. If you get complacent it can be easy to slip into the wrong frame of mind.

Communication is crucial

On the rugby field communication is everything. If you don't communicate well you won't be able to play how you want to play, or in the right areas.
