One Armed Bandit
Next day awoke and had nice breakfast! One of the perks of the holiday for me was that Mark was a chef. Went back to Playa de Berria and were greeted with 3-4ft tubing waves. As this was the first beach we came across we decided to do a bit more searching. We didn't find anything as good and went to a break called Galizano, however much to our horror, the wind turned onshore.
We decided to go back to de Berria conditions were not as good as they were in the morning but some nice lefts working through and nice wipe-outs. Over lunch we consulted 'Stormrider' and found a break just round the corner from Galizano.
We got to Playa de Langre and parked at the top of the cliffs. Looking down it didn't look that big, boy were we wrong. The waves were huge and peaked at around 8-10ft. I was way out of my depth but thought what the hell!
I got out the back but didn't catch many waves as the steepness was terrifying. Mat and Mark were ripping! The waves got bigger and bigger throughout the session and the number of surfers dropped. The backdrop was incredible with sheer cliffs either side.
The next day the weather turned and the rain started to pour down. The waves and wind were maxing out and we had to look east to the more sheltered breaks. We found a sheltered spot called Orinon, where we could see clean lines coming through but didn't look too big and only one surfer was out. We paddled out and we could see that the waves were a lot bigger than we anticipated. Within a few minutes we were greeted with the sight of a stand up tube! This was the first time I'd seen one in the flesh and it was an awesome sight.
It took a while to build up our confidence but we soon all caught a number of waves. I got my first proper cover up, which was by accident which made me very, very happy. It was a beach break - very shallow but you would have thought it would have been a reef break judging by the shape, speed and power of the wave. We all took some almighty wipeouts but didn't care as the waves were so good! In the afternoon we went into Santander and called into an internet cafe to check the surf. Much to my horror the surf was predicted to get bigger. We decided it was time to move onto Mundaka...
