But could big cats really be breeding in the Wiltshire countryside? If you go down to the woods today...could you get a big surprise? Beastwatch UK, an organisation which collates data on non-indiginous animal sightings, claims that 10,000 unusual beasts have been spotted in the UK since 2002. Sightings of super-size felines have become increasingly commonplace in the South West, with recent statistics identifying Wiltshire as a particular 'hot spot'. Into the wildAssuming they are here, how did they arrive? The most popular theory relates to the 1976 Dangerous Animals Act, which placed strict restrictions on the ownership of non-indigenous species. Big cats had previously been a fixture of private zoos or menageries, and it is believed that these new laws compelled owners to release their pets into the wild. "The population of large cats out there consists of pumas, lynx and a small form of melanistic leopard (or black panther)," said Frank Tunbridge, who runs a big cat 'hotline' and investigates sightings in the West country.听听 "I believe that there are a large proportion of hybrid cats which are commonly seen, as well and these have evolved in the last 30 years or more to a type of large British big cat which has naturalised itself to its environment and its diet." Despite plentiful anecdotal evidence, many in the scientific community remain unconvinced, arguing that that a breeding colony of large predators in a relatively small country would produce a much more evidence. 'Monster'A spate of sheep killings near Minety in 2002 lead to speculation that the animal dubbed the 'Minety monster' was a big cat, and a local woman reported encountering a large feline while walking her dog. In 2003 大象传媒 News reported the sighting of a large black cat near Devizes. According to Danny Bamping of the Bristol Big Cats Society, the best evidence of alien felines came in 1998 when an animal was killed near Warminster. It was taken to Paignton Zoo, where it was identified as a jungle cat: a small, lynx-like creature native to parts of Asia.
