More miles for your money

As fuel prices fluctuate, get more miles out of your tank of fuel by following these handy tips.

As fuel prices fluctuate, filling our cars up with petrol or diesel is getting more and more expensive.

Driving economically can save somewhere in the region of 10-15% of your fuel. So if it takes £40 to fill your tank up, you could be saving at least £4 worth of fuel by just following a few simple tips.

Driving Economically

  • Remove roof racks and clutter from the boot of your car. The car will use more fuel to carry the extra weight.
  • Avoid rapid acceleration and braking.
  • Check your tyre pressures. Under inflated tyres can increase your fuel consumption by up to 10%.
  • Avoid engine idling when stuck in traffic. Turning your engine off will conserve fuel. One minute of idling consumes more fuel than starting your engine.
  • Avoid going over 70mph on the motorway. Driving at 90mph for example uses 48% more fuel than 50mph, and 35% more than 70.
  • Change gear earlier and only when you have to - don't over rev or labour the engine.
  • Air-conditioning and heating systems all consume fuel, so only use them when you have to.
  • Maintain your car properly – poorly tuned engines can more than double your fuel consumption.
  • Know your route - you won't waste fuel getting lost or driving further than you have to.
  • Keeping at a constant speed will consume less fuel.
  • Anticipate what's going to happen in front of you.
