Gorgeous Swindon, not even a shell of its former self, thing with Swindon is whatever's pretty gets filled in, bricked over and turned into either a pub or factory, next up's clarence house, i love Swindon but couldn't live there again, numpty gormless councilers that enjoy the inbred apathy have turned it, in my lifetime, into a bunch of ugly buildings facing each other, you can hardly reach fresh air never mind sunlight

What an absolute treasure Faringdon Road park was. Whilst I appreciate we still have Queens park and the Town Gardens, looking back at the old photos makes you feel you are missing something. The Park today is just Grass and a haven for some of our more undesirable residents.

Interesting pictures, but more detail, and especially dates, would make them even more so. My first job was in Swindon, at the old Tax Office in Clarence House, Clarence Street 1958 to 1960. I used to go for luch-hour walks around the town, and I don't recall many of the buildings being there at that time - where, for instance, is/was the Queens Theatre? My guess is that most, if ot all, of these pictures (and in gallery 1) pre-date that late-1950s period by a fair margin, judging by the clothing of the people we can see and the almost total lack of traffic! My guess on most of them would be early 1920s, with some maybe as late as just before the war, but probably not many are later than that. DOea anyone have any definite information?

My maternal Grandmother, Catherine Scammell was concierge at this hotel in the 1920s. Her husband, Frederick was a member of the Wiltshire constabulary.

The dispensary and baths on the corner of Milton Road and Faringdon Road was also a GP's surgery. Great pictures but I too would love them all to be dated!

Great pics , but I think this is baths and dispensary ( later GP's surgery as well) The GWR hospital was other side of the road .
