Many in South Africa had been expecting Nelson Mandela and the other defendants to be sentenced to death as an outcome of their Rivonia trial.
The life sentences that they received in 1964 came as a huge surprise to many.
Mr Bizos has been recollecting the time of the trial and the months that followed the sentencing.
He spoke to Peter Ndoro on the line from Johannesburg.
