Forum 6 : Independence The mood of most Africans at Independence was one of extreme optimism and hope. But within a few years, the political and economic fragility of many new states became obvious. How much was Africa or the West to blame? Has Europe continued to exploit Africa through trade and aid? Or does the problem lie in chronic instability, and corrupt, ineffective government? I do think that any economic growth has to have in it an element of diversity and continuity which is collectively sustainable. The current economic problems in Africa are due to the fact that as a whole the economy is debt driven, and all that is created goes to service these debts. So long as this is the situation there can never be any form of economic success. One look at my own country since Mugabe took over should suffice - back to darkest Africa. Dr Kevin Evans I should like to see a history of the creation of the Organizaion of African Unity and the story behind it. I think most of us have lost faith in the organisation's ability and we need something to revamp our interest in this legendary organization. As we witness the world benefiting from globalization, we African's seem to be more divided than ever. So, it is my strong belief that we must seek an African solution to Africa's problem. A number of great leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia struggled a great deal to make it a reality. If one looks back, considering it was right after the end of colonization, I think it was a remarkable effort and accomplishment. Lily Beshawred Political freedom with no economic power is not full freedom. Where does all the money of the IMF goes to? At least Kenya and Uganda have schools at all levels but the rest do not. Lazimia, Canada Not a word on the site about the terrible cost to the people of post independent Africa in terms of corruption, and governments' incompetence, nor the paranoia about local control, a root cause of the paucity of foreign investment in funds, technology and expertise.
