Project: Nightly Express

  • Hamid Ismailov, ´óÏó´«Ã½ World Service's writer in residence was inspired to compile a collection of people's dreams by a writing project he completed in 1991
  • A newspaper represents all human consciousness - it is a patchy, fragmented, haphazard collection of events, words and reality with a lifespan of a day...
  • ... but what about the idea of peoples' unconscious narrative: the pictures and feelings people compose into dreams while sleeping?
  • The Nightly Express is a project in which Hamid appealed to ´óÏó´«Ã½ World Service's audience for a descriptions of their dreams. He received over 100 contributions.
  • Hamid put the dreams into a newspaper layouts from the 1960s. He left the headlines and advertisements intact
  • The subjects of the dreams received included falling cakes, animals on a cosmic merry-go-round, favourite sunglasses and a character called Captain Smollett
  • Contributors admitted to the reoccurring dreams they experience - and about chances to connect again with loved ones who have died
  • Hamid's dream appeal also generated discussion on the prophetic nature of dreams and the shared experience of personal stories

All newspapers, in all corners of the world are preoccupied with the daily - and real - events of the world around us.

But what about the idea of a collection of dreams, reported as fact from all corners of the globe: a snapshot of the unconscious world at night?

Hamid Ismailov, our writer in residence, and has compiled them into a "Nightly Express".
