Up to a hundred thousand people will take to the streets across Europe today to protest against austerity measures being implemented by governments across the continent.
The biggest of the protests will be in Brussels, but others will be held in Greece, Italy, Ireland and Latvia. A general strike is also taking place in Spain, hitting transport and other public services.
The protest in Brussels has been described by unions as a day of action under the slogan "No to austerity, priority to jobs and growth".
Are you prepared to take austerity measures for the greater good of the country?

Ayuen Awan - Utterly, no! A country like South Sudan where I come from has no capacity to fight recession because it depends on outsiders for all her needs starting from Agricultural products to manufactured goods.

Debbie in Indiana emailed - My husband, an attorney, worked for a large co for 20+ years and was in charge of litigation when he was terminated 2 years ago. He has opened his own private law practice, but business is sparce, we are almost to the point of cashing in our retirement account since we have exhausted all of our savings. I'm thankful that I was able to get a job at age 53 to help pay expenses. What can and should the government do to help him?

Dorothy in North Carolina emailed - I'm always surprised that middle class Americans have bought into the rich class's anti-union attitude and into a whole range of policies that favor the rich over the middle class. It is as if the middle class thinks that if the rich get richer, so will they. The middle class has been duped and doesn't even know it.

Linda in the US emailed - Perhaps this is a US perspective, as I will quote a US President. Ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country. I would ask are people doing enough to help themselves?

Tom D Ford on the blog - We need to return to the Liberal idea of Government of The People, by The People, and For the People, financially restore the social safety net at the bottom, and bring taxes back to a level where the wealthy pay more of their fair share for the benefits that The People provide for them.

Emeka Ejim - The current dispensation in Nigeria is still young for such assessment, following the demise of its predecessor. But the current president has pledged his commitment to fighting the scourge of poverty and deprivation, and getting the country out of the economic woes caused by the recession

Carlos Acevedo - here in America, the question is, are the people doing enough for the government? Here, it is People for the government. Not Government for the people. Sigh.

Denise in San Francisco - Since government policies and low tax rates that cater to the rich and corporations, then it is in the government's responsibility to get us of this mess.
