| Thursday, 9 Sept. 2010 | 18:06 - 19:00 GMT

A large number of people in the UK are, according to research by the counselling service Relate - indeed, a fifth of those aged 35-44 are lonely or suffering depression.

When you do have the wobble? And what are the sign someone is having a mid-life - a fast car, having an affair or being miserable about not achieving our dreams?

Tholumusa Favoured Mlalazi - If you expect too much, it's more like biting more than you can chew. Sooner or later, You will choke and be disappointed.

Vijay Srao - people are taught to expect too much from life which leads to conspicious consumption and debt. The world financial crisis was caused by people feeling entitled to " a good life " and over extending themselves.

Divas Kumar - People seem to grow older, but they don't seem to grow up. Instead of accepting themselves for what they are, everyone is trying to be someone else. If you ask me, i've never seen a more foolish animal than humans.

Sean in NYC emailed - I hear what everyone is saying and I feel like I'm going through a crisis at 26. I look at my life every day and realize that the dreams I had as a kid a almost certainly not going to come true. All the things I work for on a daily basis are for some future goal that I'll never meet

Daniel McGill - I don't have any expectations any more. I am 57 have been unemployed for 3 yrs, no insurance, no income at all. Sometimes my whole life seems to be a crisis.

Lincoln Muri on the blog - We live in a nation of "high living & simple thinking" instead of the opposite. Unfortunately, that will be pretty hard to change since the average American is a "C" or "D" student. As a result, all this advertising and propaganda is readily swallowed by the masses and consumerism flourishes while dreams are shattered.

Ray Ikenna - Definitely i expect much from life...Who wouldnt want the good things of life? But it all depends on the realistic nature of such expectations which can achieved

Shameer Ali in Georgetown, Guyana emailed - I'm 32, married and have two wonderful daughters; we have our own home, a car and life is generally good yet I'm still depressed. Sometimes i wonder if I acheived these things too early in life and maybe somehow that is to blame for my depression

Laurence in Alexandria, Virginia - I am a boomer, American male, recently divorced, thrust into the awful seniors dating scene. It is tragicomedy at best. I am finding that the 60ish single women expect the moon, and right away.

Mulya Gonja - Yeah right. Expectations too high, achievements so low. Thats what often happens.

Caroline Hubin - I certainly do expect too much from life and probably our environment and the media and all advertising around us do push us to expect always more and more, but it does not help us feel happier most of the time.

Jeni Matela - we expect too much from ourselves, people expect too much from us...then we blame life for it.

Crimp Cam'wire Off' - i expect too much..sometimes one askes why only one life is given to archieve so much out of life..

Babatunde Oseiza Bello in Nigeria - I think its a normal human nature to expect alot from life, even when u dont know what it has to offer.

Gary in Oakland emails - I have lived several years now (66) , have arrived at a good understanding of what life can provide, and do not expect more than this. Some people act and speak as if they believe their existence amounts to ejection from Eden and that proper actions will allow living readmission to this idyllic state.

Ibrahim in UK on the blog - there is so much materialism in our lives; advertising telling us which product will make us happy, how many houses we need, which clothes, which cars, what kind of lifestyle etc. These are impossible targets, and are they even desirable targets or our own targets?

Nate in Portland on the blog - My father-in-law used to say the ideal way to live is characterized by "Simple living, high thinking." I think the fact that I'm very happy with my life, despite being in the 35-44 age group, can be partly explained by this approach to life.

Cabe in UK on the blog - Yes, people take everything for granted. Everything is easy; they no longer have to farm, barter or think hard. Its nothing to do with 'baby boomers'! Deterioration into Global chaos has been around since WW2 -possibly earlier, and caused by technology, too much introverted leisure, and the media shrinking the world to a selfish, small-minded, little 'me' place.

We''re now moving on to talk about midlife crises - and whether we expect too much from life.

Nadeem Sajjad - In my opinion the verdict is fair. Islam teaches to respect all the religions and the same done by the Indian court. We at Pakistan have no right to interfere in the internal matters of India.

Robert Zeller - The court was fair in its decision. It is not a court of law's job to make both sides happy; but to settle a dispute as evenly as possible under the laws of the area the court is in.
