Poland was one of the first Eastern European countries to witness the fall of Communism.
As Poland's economy crumbled, a series of negotiations during early 1989, known as the 'Round Table Talks', produced an agreement for partly-open National Assembly elections.
In June that year the failure of the Communists at the polls produced a political crisis and a non-communist government was eventually elected.
Suddenly Poland entered the post-communist era.
