Finding missing aircraft
A few days ago an underwater search began for an American woman pilot who went missing 65 years ago.
Gertrude Tomkins Silver is the only unaccounted for member of the WASPS or Women Airforce Service Pilots, an elite all female flight squadron formed by the US at the height of the Second World War.
The WASPs were civilians who delivered planes from factories to ports for overseas shipping. They often flew in dangerous conditions, in new 'unproven' planes.
38 of them died in training or in service.
Gertrude Tompkins Silver , nicknamed 'Tommy' (inset, above), went missing with her P-51 Mustang near Los Angeles on October 26th 1944.
Now boats equipped with sonar equipment and ten divers have started looking for her plane.
Pat Macha, a retired teacher turned aviation archaeologist, is one of those leading the hunt.
He spoke to Outlook shortly before preparing for another day of searching the seabed.
