Church Allegations

Allegations have emerged of abuse in a South African church sheltering hundreds of Zimbabwean refugees.

Despite improvements in the political and economic situation in Zimbabwe there are around three million Zimbabweans living in neighbouring South Africa.

This has caused tensions in the townships.

A Methodist church in Johannesburg sheltering thousands of refugees has become the centre of a new controversy.

Some refugees have been accused of the sexual abuse of young girls.

One Zimbabwean teacher at the church has been suspended and a police investigation into the claims is ongoing.

However there are fears that any closure of the church could leave the refugees with no safe haven.
