Saving the macaws

Scarlet macaws are large colourful parrots that live in the American tropics. Their plumage is mostly scarlet, with red and yellow patches and light blue tail feathers.

But deforestation has had a big impact on numbers and a lot of wild birds have been taken from the wild and sold as pets.

At the Belize Zoo in Central America keepers are trying to educate people about the animal which is now on the endangered list.

The zoo's director Sharon Matola has been learning more about these extraordinary birds.

She began this report by stepping inside the macaw's cage with keeper Rafael Sho.
