Gay couple imprisoned in Malawi

There has been condemnation from Western countries and human rights organisations following the sentencing of two gay men in Malawi to 14 years in prison with hard labour.

The men - Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza - were arrested in December 2009 after they held a traditional engagement ceremony.

They have been in prison ever since, and a few days ago were found guilty by the courts of performing unnatural acts and gross indecency.

The 14 year sentence was the harshest the court could impose.

Tiwonge Chimbalanga's brother-in-law, Maxwell Manda, went to visit him in prison earlier this week.

He spoke to Outlook and told Matthew Bannister how the two men are facing up to their prison sentences now they have been separated.

Plus, the 大象传媒's Raphael Tenthani, who was in court for the hearing, explained what the judge said as he passed sentence.
