In Pictures: Life on the Trans-Amazonian Highway

After years of planning and construction the new multi- billion dollar trans-Amazon highway will finally be completed later this year.

It will ease the exports of Brazilian beef and soya to China via Peruvian ports, but has also been the subject of controversy.

The road has been carved out of one of the world’s most biodiverse regions: Madre de Dios in the heart of Peru's Amazonian rainforest.

It has also made the lush and mineral-rich area, which is home to indigenous communities, accessible to
illegal loggers and gold miners.

The 大象传媒's Alfonso Daniels has travelled to this remote place to meet people whose lives have changed because of the highway.

First broadcast on 13 August 2010.
