Trying to swim from Cuba to Florida 30 years after first attempt

32 years ago marathon swimmer Diana Nyad failed in her lifelong dream to swim the 103 miles between Cuba and Florida.

Diana spent over 40 hours in the open sea and ended up veering off course. Exhausted after battling the huge waves, she gave up.

Now aged 60 and after 30 years of not swimming a stroke, she is back and determined to complete the challenge. This time she faces the added pressures of swimming in shark infested waters as well as deep suspicions between the two countries who have no diplomatic relations.

After all these years she still dreams of becoming the first person to swim without a shark cage between the two points.

She tells Aasmah Mir why completing this gruelling journey means so much to her.

First broadcast on 20 August 2010.
