Living amongst the dead

Sixty-year-old Virginia de la Cruz has been living in Manila's Navotas cemetery since 1986.

She lives with ten members of her family in cramped conditions amongst the tombs, which are stacked up to eight coffins high.

Virginia's family are not alone; space is so limited in Manila that there are now about 600 families living in the cemetery.

The cemetery's inhabitants are surrounded by a sea of rubbish and have to use stepladders to climb up and down to their homes.

But while they are afraid of the precarious living conditions, they are not afraid of ghosts. They are more concerned about the rumours that their homes may one day be demolished.

Outlook's Kate McGeown went to meet Virginia and her family.
