Michael Morpurgo's Cause

Michael Morpugo is an award winning children's writer.

In his latest book he tells the story of a young Afghan boy and his mother who flee their home and find their way to Britain. They find themselves held in a detention centre in the UK while the government tries to send them back to Afghanistan.

Although the story is fictional, the detention centre which is featured is very real. The British government says it plans to stop the policy which has seen more than a thousand children of failed asylum seekers a year being locked up in detention centres whilst awaiting deportation.

But Michael Morpurgo says the government is not moving fast enough and he has sent a copy of his book 'Shadow' too British Prime Minister David Cameron pressing him to act immediately.

Michael joined Matthew in the Outlook studio and told him why he is so passionate about his cause.

'Shadow', by Michal Morpugo is out now and published by Harper Collins Children’s Books.

First broadcast on 14 October 2010.
