Pakistan struggles with Swat exodus

The authorities in Pakistan are struggling to cope with the large numbers of people fleeing the fighting in the Swat valley where government forces are intensifying their offensive against Taleban militants.

Tens of thousands of civilians took advantage of the lifting of a curfew in parts of the valley on Sunday to escape the fighting and join those already flooding refugee camps.

The military says government forces have killed several hundred militants over the weekend, though there is no independent confirmation of the figures.

Dr Arshad Ahmed Khan is director of medical services for the regional centre at Mardan.
