Iran: A Tehran resident's account

Riot police and the Islamic Basij militia have been on the streets in recent days

It is more than a week since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was officially declared the winner of Iran's presidential election.

There were huge protests in the streets by opposition supporters in the first week after the result was announced.

However, on Friday, the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called for an end to the protests and the Revolutionary Guard has also warned demonstrators against further protests.

One of the opposition presidential candidates, Mehdi Karroubi, has meanwhile called for ceremonies to be held on Thursday to mourn those killed in protests over the controversial results.

Heavy restrictions have been placed on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ and other foreign news organisations.

Reporters are not allowed to cover unauthorised gatherings or move around freely in Tehran.

Over the past days, opposition demonstrations have become fewer and more sparsely-attended, after security forces began using more violent tactics.

The ´óÏó´«Ã½'s World Update spoke to one Tehran resident about what happened on the streets on Monday.
