Is food more important than political freedom?

A proud American writes...

I'm a very proud American citizen, and I believe there is nothing greater than the political freedom offered by my country. I live in a country where you ARE given the ability to get ahead; whether you do or don't is your own personal decision. I live in a rural area in a lower middle-class demographic, and I realize my success is based on my initiative. America offers its citizens amazing potential, but we ultimately choose our path. Without sounding heartless or naive, I truly believe that no American has a reason to go hungry. There is an open job market, a strong economy, and our great society is becoming more and more equal-opportunity. While I most defiantly feel we should do all that we can to provide for our citizens, I do not feel it should come at the expense of other's rights. Even in the land of plenty, we must expect to work to receive.
Brittney Moraski, age 14. Michigan, USA

We get food through freedom

Call me an elitist if you want, but I agree with Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). His stance on poverty was that a starving mind was a greater crime than a starving body. Christ said that the poor will always be with us, but at the same time he strived to teach the poor, who are blessed, for they will inherit the earth. He also told his disciples to render to Caesar that which was Caesar's, and to share God's gifts among his children. In this world of mortals, absolute political freedom or control is not possible for long, but in a free society, we are more able to find and develop our strengths and so feed ourselves and others.

Freedom is the essence of life

Yes freedom is the essence of life, and we in this country [UK] are taking a very cavalier attitude. We have been allowing small businesses, independent traders to go to the wall for too long. Look at the average high street, chains, franchises. This is not free trade. Charity begins at home, and we must look critically at how we order our own lives, economically, socially, spiritually.
