I have a right to...



Reporters Archive - 2000/2001

The global education project "I have a right to..." features radio programmes produced in 2000-2001 by 大象传媒 World Service producers who have traveled the world over, from Sierra Leone to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The programmes, which have been produced in eleven languages, highlight not only human rights violations but also bring to the fore examples where change and progress are being made.


Majlinda Zeqiri - Albanian
In a series of nine programmes, Majlinda Zeqiri examined the child victims of vendetta crimes, juvenile crime, and women's rights. She also looked at the co-existence with Roma and Serbs in Kosovo, Greeks in Albania and Albanians in Macedonia.

Mounira Chaib - Arabic
Mounira Chaib visited the Headquarters of the United Nations Commission for Human Rights in Geneva and attended a conference organised by Article 19, the human rights and press freedom organisation based in London. Her radio series marked the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR).

Josephine Onike Hazeley - English for Africa
To mark World Human Rights Day, on 10 December 2000, the 大象传媒 African Service ran a series of programmes. The producer, Josephine Hazeley from Sierra Leone, traveled to Uganda, Malawi and Sierra Leone to record interviews. From her home country Sierra Leone, she reported on how people were dealing with the aftermath of the gross violation of human rights that occurred during the rebel war.

Charu Shahane - English
Charu Shahane produced four programmes highlighting international debates over human rights: Whose human rights are worth going to war over?; Food versus Freedom; Holding rebel groups to account and International Justice. Presented by Rageh Omaar.
Broadcast October - November 2000.
Charu Shahane also presented "A Simple Guide to Human Rights", a two twelve-part series for 大象传媒 World Learning in which she covered key articles of the UDHR.

Jamila Tangaza - Hausa
Jamila Tangaza looked at human rights issues and abuses in Nigeria. She produced and presented eight 12-minute programmes on subjects such as free expression and the Islamic Sharia-based law.
Broadcast February - March 2001.
As a follow-up to this series, a two-day event using drama was organised in front of a live audience in Nigeria to focus on human rights issues.

Salma Zaidi - Hindi
Over twelve weeks, Salma Zaidi looked at the right to justice and equality, guaranteed by law in India but often lacking for ordinary people who regard the legal system as too complicated or prone to corruption.
Broadcast January - April 2001.
A follow-up series of lectures on topical human rights issues were organised with high-profile speakers, including the award-winning Aruna Roy.

Sergei Zakin - Russian
Sergei Zakin traveled to St Petersburg, Voronezh and Ingushetia to report on the plight of Chechen refugees, the progress of judicial reform and press freedom. He produced 10 programmes.

Follow-up debates were organised in partnership with NGO's in Russia.

In eight programmes, Natasa Narancic looked at human rights issues in Serbia (including Kosovo) and Montenegro.

Adri谩n Fern谩ndez - Spanish
Adri谩n Fern谩ndez traveled to USA, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia for eight programmes covering issues such as the death penalty and the rights of indigenous peoples.

Building on the first series, the Spanish Service organised a series of tailor-made events examining migration - in partnership with the Mexican broadcaster Detr谩s de la Noticia.

Jumbe Omari Jumbe - Swahili
Jumbe Omari Jumbe traveled to Kenya & Tanzania for ten programmes covering issues such as redress through the courts, prison conditions and economic and social rights.
Broadcast January - March 2001.
In partnership with NGOs and legal experts in Kenya, the Swahili Service developed a drama to illustrate human rights issues, including the right to land over the right to employment.

Aygen Ayta莽 - Turkish
To examine freedom of expression, torture, capital punishment and economic and social inequality in fifteen programmes, Aygen Aytac traveled to Brussels, Vienna and Strasbourg and nine towns in Turkey.

Nayeema Ahmad - Urdu
For ten radio programmes, Nayeema Ahmad traveled throughout Pakistan. She looked at women's issues such as honour killings, forced marriages, the trafficking of women and domestic violence
