Terry Caffey lived in Wills Point, a strong Christian community in East Texas, USA.
He was asleep in bed with his wife Penny on the 1st March 2008 when gunmen entered the house, shot them both repeatedly and then headed upstairs to kill their sons. Matthew was 13 and Tyler was 8.
The killers then set the house on fire.
Terry was left for dead but managed to escape out of the bathroom window and crawl for help.
Hours later, in hospital, he realised he did not know what had happened to his 16 year-old daughter, Erin.
He was told by a relative that she had escaped from the house and was safe but shortly afterwards he heard that she had been arrested on her way to visit him.
She had been involved with the plot to kill the family. Her boyfriend Charlie Wilkinson and a schoolfriend of his had carried out the murders whilst Erin waited outside in the car.
Erin is now in prison and will not be granted parole for at least 25 years.
Terry found it very difficult to accept that his daughter played a role in the crime. But he now says he has forgiven her - and the gunmen.
He described the night of the murders in graphic detail to Outlook's Lucy Ash.
You may find his account distressing.
