For the Sherpas of the Everest, or Khumbu, region of Nepal, keeping healthy is an uphill struggle.

The climate is harsh, the area isolated and facilities few and far between – sanitation, health clinics and even roads are very hard to come by.

That's why the one hospital in the region is vitally important to the people there.

Funded by foreign donations, the Kunde Hospital is staffed entirely by locals - people who know the mountains well.

Outlook’s Joanna Jolly put on her walking boots and trekked the long three and a half thousand metre climb to the Kunde Hospital.

There, she met the hospital’s Dr Tsering Wangdi Sherpa, who told her about his work at high altitude in full view of Everest.
