The man who stabbed to death a pregnant Egyptian woman in a German courtroom has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Wearing the Islamic headscarf was an important religious choice for Egyptian Marwa El Sherbini.

And it is for her headscarf that many will now remember her. Marwa became known as the "veil martyr" when she was stabbed to death for her choice of headwear.

After the Egyptian pharmacist moved to Germany she was racially abused for wearing the hijab by a man called Alexander Wiens.

She took him to court and was preparing to give evidence against him when he brutally attacked her.

The pregnant pharmacist was stabbed at least 16 times in front of her three year old son.

Her husband tried to intervene, but he too was stabbed, and was then accidentally shot by a policeman.

The case caused outrage in her native Egypt where she became known as "the veil martyr".

Thousands of people attended her funeral and there were a number of protests in Cairo.

Alexander Wiens has now been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Matthew Bannister spoke to Dr Marwa El Sherbini's brother, Tarek about about the impact of the case on the family.
