When young British film-maker Will Pike checked into Mumbai's Taj Hotel, it was to prove a life changing visit.

Will and his girlfriend Kelly Doyle had been on holiday in Goa and decided to spend their last night in Mumbai before flying home to Britain.

They had checked into the Taj Hotel when they heard the sound of gunfire.

The couple found themselves in the midst of the Mumbai attacks as 10 gunmen went on the rampage with guns and hand grenades.

They were trapped in their hotel room, gripped by fear, afraid that they would die.

As the fighting came closer, the building was set on fire and Will decided to escape.

He made a rope from bed sheets, curtains and towels to climb from the bedroom window.

It all went terribly wrong, and Will fell 50 feet, breaking his spine and suffering multiple injuries.

Now back in Britain, Will is paralysed from the waist down and has to use a wheelchair.

Under British law he is not entitled to any compensation because the attack was outside the UK.

Will has been campaigning for a change in that law - a change which the government has promised but not yet delivered.

The British Ministry of Justice said, "There is a strong case for a compensation scheme, though there are also some complex issues".

The Government has provided £1m to a charitable fund to help UK victims of terrorism abroad, and the Foreign Office provides some immediate financial assistance on an exceptional basis to British nationals affected by a terrorist incident abroad."

In the meantime, Will Pike continues to campaign.

Matthew Bannister spoke to Will and asked him about the events which were to change his life forever.
