The Indian-Pakistani border has long been patrolled by male soldiers.

But now for the first time India's military authorities have given women the chance to police parts of the international border.

This is a dream come true for many who have swapped a life of domestic duties for armed patrol.

Outlook reporter Nivedita Pathak has travelled to the Northern Indian state of Punjab to meet some of the newest recruits.
