Katie Piper - Acid Attack Survivor

Katie Piper was a 24-year old model and TV presenter when she was attacked with acid. She was left fighting for her life and suffering from terribly disfiguring burns to her face, arms and chest. Following pioneering surgery using artificial skin to re-build her face, she told Matthew Bannister about her life-changing experience.

40th Anniversary of the Moon Landings

In July many Outlook listeners described their memories of the 1969 moon landings. We also spoke to some of the lucky few who have themselves travelled into space, including the European astronaut Jean-Francois Clervoy and the Russian cosmonaut Georgy Grechko.

Back to School in the Swat Valley

One of the big stories of the year was the campaign by the Pakistan Government to drive the Taleban from the Swat Valley. Local journalist Adnan Rashid kept Outlook listeners up to date as he and his family fled the city of Mingora. After their return, he sent us his report about local schools reopening as life in the valley gradually returned to normal.

Josef Fritzl's Psychiatrist, Dr. Heidi Kastner

After it emerged that Austrian Josef Fritzl had held his daughter prisoner in his cellar and fathered her seven children, anyone could have been forgiven for assuming him insane. However the forensic psychiatrist Dr. Heidi Kastner came to the clear conclusion that he is in fact sane. It was a crucial piece of expert evidence for the prosecution, meaning that Fritzl could be put on trial and brought to account for his crimes, for which he is now serving a life sentence. Dr Heidi Kastner spoke to Matthew and told him how the experience has affected her.

Save Our Sounds - Kyrgystan

The ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Save Our Sounds project tracked down the sounds we would miss most if they disappeared. Abdujalil Abdurasulov in Kyrgystan shared the sound of thundering horse hooves - a sound which reminds him of his childhood.

Climbing the Himalayas Blind

For Sabriye Tenberken, being blind is no obstacle to fulfilling her dreams - she led an expedition of visually impaired children up a mountain in the Himalayas and described her extraordinary experience to Outlook.
