In May this year Jonathan R Trappe fulfilled a childhood dream by tying himself to a large bunch of helium-filled toy balloons and floating 40 miles across the English Channel.

It sounds like madness, but the 37 year old American is a trained pilot, and says he took every precaution for his safety.

He even got permission from the authorities in both England and France to make the trip.

Earlier this month his balloons carried him on an even longer, higher journey across Lake Michigan in the USA.

Jonathan R Trappe spoke to Matthew Bannister from North Carolina, and explained how his first attempts to make balloon flights relied on some pretty basic equipment.
