The transport tunnels which run under the streets of Manhattan used to provide home and shelter for people who had nowhere else to live.

In the mid 1990s, the acclaimed Dutch war photographer and anthropologist Teun Voeten spent several months underground with them and documented their daily lives in his book, Tunnel People.

But in 1996, the tunnels were closed and the people who had been living there were re-housed.

13 years later, Teun decided to track them down and to see how they were getting on above ground.

He spoke to Outlook's Jo Fidgen, and told her about his first encounter with the tunnel people, and how he gained their trust.
