Biofuels

Sue Nelson presents the first in a new series of discussions about the science behind the news.

Biofuels

A UN food expert recently labelled biofuels a 'crime against humanity'.

They have been seen as the root of the global food crisis, with increasing farming land being used to grow crops for fuel, rather than food.

But is the 'food for fuel' debate a fallacy?

Have biofuels been wrongly blamed as the cause of food insecurity? Could they be a valid solution to the problems of climate change?

Do they take up valuable land needed to grow food? And are there alternative raw materials we could use, rather than food crops, to make biofuels?
