Jay Z's Glasto moment
'That was like winning the first Grammy for me' says American rap star
20ÌýSeptemberÌý2009Ìý-ÌýHip-hop giant Jay Z has likened the moment he opened his set at Glastonbury last year with Oasis' hit Wonderwall, to winning his first Grammy award. The controversial billing of Jay Z as the Saturday night headline act at the festival, which has traditionally seen rock acts fill the three slots, turned out to be a triumph.
"That was like winning the first Grammy for me," said Jay Z to Andrew Marr on ´óÏó´«Ã½ One this morning (Sunday 20 September), following his support slots for Coldplay at their Wembley Stadium shows.
"It was one of those times, almost like knocking the door down. It was almost like the people saying no, 'We want that to happen, that's the natural progression. We like rap, we like rock, we like everything'," he explained.
"If we believed that a thing that started should be held forever, I’d still be a slave right."

Jay Z went on to say it was "archaic thinking that was in the way", adding: "If we believed that a thing that started should be held forever, I'd still be a slave right.
"We'd still be in slavery - so things change and the world changes and I think it's best to embrace change."
Meanwhile the star admitted he's now eyeing up The Beatles' crown.
Jay Z has made history, securing his 11th number one album with The Blueprint 3, overtaking Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most number one albums in the history of Billboard's Top 200 chart.
"We were tied with 10. The Stones I believe have nine, but The Beatles of course have 19 so that's my next goal," he said laughingly.
While onstage at Coldplay's show on Friday night he said he "feels like the King Of Pop".
