Amazon: Organisations

To find out more about the Amazon and some of the many organisations which are active in the Amazon, see the links below:


The Amazon Conservation Association is active in Peru and Bolivia, with a mission to conserve the biological diversity of the Amazon.


A US based organisation working to defend the environment and rights of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin.


A US based charity working for international conservation of habitats. Has worked with the Kayapo indigenous people to recognise and protect their territories (Bruce visits the Kayapo in episode 6).


Supporting the rights of forest peoples in South America, Central Africa and South and Southeast Asia. Campaigns for the forest people of the Amazon.


International organisation that works to defend the natural world through action. In the Amazon, Greenpeace campaigns on issues of conservation and human rights.


The Amazon Institute of People and the Environment, a non-profit research institution founded in 1990 aiming to encourage the sustainable use of natural resources in the eastern Amazon.


Aims to protect rivers and defend the rights of riverine communities. Campaigning against the damming of the Xingu River, featured in episode six of the programme.


The world conservation union. Active in protecting the biodiversity of the Amazon.


Aiming to raise appreciation of wild lands, particularly rainforests.


An organisation of the Matsés people (a people including the Marubo community Bruce visits in episode three of the programme). Based in Peru and working in the Javari valley to support Matsés communities.


A UK charity aiming to protect threatened natural habitats and the indigenous people who depend on them for survival. At present running conservation projects in Brazil and Peru and working closely with local conservation groups to protect rainforests.


Works to protect rainforest globally.


Shinai works to defend the rights and territories of indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon, including the Achuar community with which Bruce stayed.


The International Movement for Tribal Peoples. Survival champion the rights of tribal people around the globe. Campaigns for the Amazonian tribal groups include: raising awareness of the health crisis in the Javari (which Bruce witnesses in episode three of the programme); working to protect the uncontacted groups of the Amazon (episode three); and publicising the Xingu dam (episode six).


International organisation working to safeguard the natural world, including the Amazon forest and rivers.
