Forming a barrier in goalball

This is the recommended position to take when defending an attacking shot.

  • Get into a ready position and listen for the bounce of the ball.
  • When the ball is released, drop down to the side to create a barrier to the ball.
  • When dropping, aim to make contact first with the knee, then hip, torso and shoulder to reduce impact with the ground.
  • As you are becoming horizontal, extend the arms and legs to create a long barrier. Try not to bend inwards.
  • Ensure you tuck your face into the arm for protection and place one leg on top of the other leg.
  • Keep both hands very close together and ensure fingers are held together to create a rigid barrier.
