Writing your own music - AQATools for musical composition

In GCSE Music you will be required to compose two pieces. To do this you will need suitable tools. You will also need to find a starting point for your music, and structure, review, evaluate and experiment with your compositions.

Writing your own music - tools for musical composition

Tools are useful for musical composition, but they are not the beginning of musical composition. The initial ideas must come from you as a musician. The music classroom will provide many more ideas. Your fellow learners will have suggestions for you, as will your teachers. However, tools can be used to manipulate ideas and add useful features to make them sound more effective.

Notation software

Notation software is best used during or at the end of the composition process. This software lets you hear many parts of your composition being played at the same time.

DAWs - digital audio workstations

DAWs can do more than notation software. DAWs - or sequencers - enable learners to create music without the barrier of notation or instrumental ability. As well as inputting musical ideas, it is possible to plug in microphones and MIDI keyboards and record directly into the software.
